  • The 2009 golfing year was not a memorable one in terms of achievements by our representative sides.  Both the men’s and women’s teams finished outside the top ten at their respective national championships while the men’s masters team squandered a great chance to make the semi-finals, leaving the women’ s masters as our top performing team with a fifth placing at the nationals.

On the individual stage, Opunake’s Aarun Langton and Westown’s Rochelle Keegan were our top golfers locally, winning the Greaves Order of Merit men’s and women’s titles respectively.  New Plymouth golfers Brad Hayward (18) and Murray Martin (56) both made national sides with Martin being a member of the winning Asia Pacific Senior team.

Our local professionals, Grant Moorhead (New Plymouth) and Craig Owen (Westown) had mediocre years with Moorhead finishing 5th on the NZPGA Order of Merit and Owen finishing 12th on the Australian PGA Legends Tour Order of Merit.  The Port Taranaki Open continues to be our premier event and this year attracted our strongest professional field ever with 48 professionals competing.  Local golfers have plenty to look forward to in 2010, with the inaugural $15,000 Dow Agrosciences Legends Pro-Am in early March getting the year off to a flying start.

  • Nine holes... two flags... you decide.   Risk and reward.  That's the essence of PowerPlay Golf.  PowerPlay Golf is a new nine-hole form of golf, where there are two flags on every green.  You can score extra points if you take a 'PowerPlay' and go for the Black Flag, but you have a limited number of 'PowerPlays' in your round - so you must choose wisely and be ready to take risks. Call it golf's equivalent of Twenty20 cricket, if you will.  Quicker, more fun, intensely competitive.  Taranaki golfers can experience Powerplay Golf at the Inglewood Golf Club next Wednesday with the club hosting a nine hole stableford event from 3-6pm.   By opting to take a powerplay and play to the more difficult hole position a player can double their stableford points.
