Pungarehu is the Dow AgroSciences Taranaki Top Club for 2013. The Coastal minnows came through on a countback after the four strong side tied with Westown on 141 stableford points for the 18 hole event. The winning Pungarehu scores were (Jordy Barrett 32, Len Adamson 30, Robert Billing 43, Sharon Adamson 36) while the Westown score were ( Max Maaka 30, Alan Foster 40, Matt Arden 38, Karen Pattison 33). Patea (Nathan Cameron 31, Neil Edgecombe 35, Nick Williams 35, Gareth Hughes 39) finished third of the 14 clubs competing in the competition which was held at the New Plymouth Golf Club on Sunday. Leading individual scores were: Senior men – Gary Johnson (Manukorihi) 39; Intermediate- Alan Foster (Westown) 40; junior –Robert Billing (Pungarehu) 43; Women- Gareth Hughes (Patea) 39.

The Taranaki women’s representative team finished bottom of the table at the Central North Island quadrangular tournament played at the Taupo Golf Club last weekend. After a an opening 5-3 win over Wellington, the eight strong Taranaki side lost 4 ½ - 3 ½ to Waikato in a rain reduced nine hole contest before catapulting to a 7 ½ - ½ thumping to overall winners Bay of Plenty. For Taranaki, Manaia teenager Tyla Winter was unbeaten with three halves at number seven while Vanessa Bouvet (number four) and Joanne McDonald (number eight) both recorded two wins. The four strong junior girls’ team (Tineka Kumeroa, Claudia Munro, Catlin Reardon and Esther White) finished third in the junior event.

An eight strong Taranaki men’s masters team will take on Manawatu-Wanganui at the Te Ngutu Golf Club on Sunday 6th October. The Taranaki team is: Aarun Langton (Opunake), Murray Martin (New Plymouth), Tony Hardy, Dean Baldock, Craig Webby (Westown), Brian Rowland (Fitzroy), Robbie Sim (Kaitake) and John Newland (Patea).

A shoulder injury has forces New Plymouth professional Grant Moorhead to withdrawal from the Charles Tour Carrua Open which tees off at the Tauranga Golf Club today. Moorhead hopes to be back to full fitness to compete in the $20,000 Telecom Business Hub Pro-Am at the Grange Golf Club next Friday. Fellow New Plymouth professionals Dominic Barson and Patrick Moore will compete for the $40,000 professional purse at the Carrus Open while Taranaki’s leading amateurs Brad Hayward and Holly Winter are also in the field for the 72 hole event.
