McCallum on Golf

Two wins against Manawatu-Wanganui (8-0) and Hawkes Bay (4 ½ - 3 ½) secured second place for the Taranaki women’s golf team at the Sybil Green quadrangular last weekend. Manaia juniors Celeste McLean (3 wins) and Holly Winter (2 ½ wins) were unbeaten at number one and three respectively. Hosts Wellington beat Taranaki 6 ½ - 1 ½ in the opening round and were easy overall winners of the event. The eight strong Taranaki team to compete in the Dunes quadrangular event against Auckland, Waikato and Bay of Plenty at the Te Awamutu Golf Club this weekend, in playing order is: Celeste McLean, Holly Winter, Vanessa Bouvet, Carol Chard, Rochelle Keegan, Tyla Winter, Joanne McDonald and Patricia Bouvet.

The Taranaki men’s golf team finished bottom of the table at last weekend’s Shand Cup which was played at the Paraparaumu Beach Links course. The 10 man team was thumped 8-2 by overall winners Wellington in the opening round before drawing with Manawatu-Wanganui in the second round and was then  edged out by Hawkes Bay 5 ½ - 4 ½ in the final round. Taranaki number one Brad Hayward was outstanding with three wins while Jamie Reid (number two) and Tim White (number five) both had two wins. The eight strong Taranaki senior team to play in the Northern Quadrangular tournament at the Akarana Golf Club in Auckland is, in playing order: Brad Hayward, Jamie Reid, Kerry Otene, Tyla Otene, Tim White, Sam Jones, Zach Lewis and Joseph Doyle.

The four strong Taranaki boy’s under 19 team finished an unlucky third in the Shand Salver last weekend. After holding Wellington to a two all draw in the opening game, the team beat Manawatu 3-1 in the second round but went down 3-1 to Hawkes Bay in the finalk round to slip down the table. The Taranaki junior boys team to compete in the Northern Quadrangular this weekend is Fletcher Broderick, Ben joseph, Daniel White and Jarron Pittams.

The Taranaki junior girl’s golf team finished 5th at the national junior interprovincial tournament played at the Rotorua Golf Club last week. The six strong team of Celeste McLean, Vanessa Bouvet, Tineka Kumeroa, Claudia Munro, Esther White and Catlin Reardon had a win over Waikato and a draw with Hawkes Bay –Poverty Bay in section play before beating Auckland 4-2 in the play-off for 5th and 6th. 15 year old Catlin Reardon (Manaia) was unbeaten for the tournament with three wins and three halved matches while Celeste McLean (Manaia) had four wins playing at number one. The 10 strong competition was won by Bay of Plenty who beat Canterbury in the final.

New Plymouth professional Craig Owen celebrated his 60th birthday in style with a fourth place finish in the F$77,000 Westin Fiji Legends Golf Classic last week. Owen (73-72-70-215) shot a one under par total for the 54 hole event which was won by Australian professional David Merriman (69-72-67-208).
