The Taranaki men’s golf team finished third at the Central North Island Quadrangular tournament played at the Taupo Golf Club last weekend. The eight strong side was thrashed 7 ½ – ½ in the opening round by Bay of Plenty and then went down 4 ½ to 3 ½ to Manawatu -Wanganui in a close match with three games being halved. In the final round Taranaki beat Eastlands 6-2. For the Taranaki side Kerry Otene was unbeaten at number five with two halves and a win while Tyla Otene (no 4) and Sam Jones (no 6) both had two wins. The four strong Taranaki boys team lost 2 ½ - 1 ½ to Bay of Plenty, drew 2 all with Manawatu Wanganui and beat Eastlands 3-1, with Jarron Pittams recording two wins and a half at number two.

Taranaki masters representative Tony Hardy got off to a perfect start at the men’s masters national interprovincial championship being played at the Coringa Golf Club in Christchurch this week. The Westown member used a four iron to hole out on the 182 metre par three 17th hole during a practice round at Coringa last Saturday.

The Patea Golf Club champions have been determined for 2013. In the senior men’s final John Newland maintained a seven hole margin after 18 holes to beat Dean Prince 7/6 in the 36 hole final. The senior women’s final was a very close encounter with Kathy Faiers beating Kath Honeyfield on the 37th hole to claim her 23rd senior title. The intermediate men’s title went to Nathan Cameron who beat Mark Hawken 5/4 while Gerald Rutten beat Neil Edgecombe 2/1 to claim the junior division. The limit title went to Elton Whakatutu who beat Harry Pullen on the 19th. In the women’s Bronze Two division Carolyn Davidson beat Barbara Hill 2/1.

Taranak masters representative Aarun Langton defeated Troy Forsyth 3/2 over 36 holes to claim the Opunake Golf Club senior matchplay championsip. In the intermediate divion Chris Cathie beat Mark Davies 2/1 while the junior title went to Snoz Hamilton who beat Liam Collins 6/5. In the limit final Peter Johnston beat Dennis Chard 6/5.

Fitzroy golfer Mike Earley teamed up with Jill Lloyd (Wairakei) to win the second division of the New Zealand Mixed Foursomes championship played at the Taupo Golf Club over Labour weekend. The duo won the seeded foursomes matchplay title when they beat Jayden MaCrae and Caroline Appleton (Shandon) 4/3 in the 18 hole final.
