New Plymouth professionals Dominic Barson (68-71-139) and Grant Moorhead (68-71-139) scored their first victories on the 2014 NZPGA schedule last weekend. The Taranaki duo shared victory with Jordan Dasler (66-73-139) in the $25,000 Mondiale Omaha Beach Golf Club Pro-am with all three players shooting a five under par total for the 36 hole event.


The second round of the Dow AgroSciences men’s handicap pennant competition was played last Sunday. In the north division one matches, Fitzroy One gained their first win edging out Inglewood One 5-4, while Manukorihi One defeated Waitara Two by the same margin. Kaitake Two used their home course advantage to thump Westown Two  8 ½ - ½. In north division two matches New Plymouth halved with Westown One at home,as did Tumahu  and Manukorihi Two while  Waitara One prevailed 5 ½ - 3 ½ over Kaitake One. In the Taranaki wide division one matches played at Te Ngutu , defending champions Waverley pipped Patea 5-4, hosts Te Ngutu One were too strong for Stratford winning 7-2 and Eltham and Fitzroy Two fought out a 4 ½ - 4 ½ draw. In division two matches, Te Ngutu Two beat Pungarehu 5 ½ - 3 ½ and Inglewood won a tight tussle against Manaia 5-4. The third round of the competition will be played on Sunday with North Taranaki divisions at Fitzroy and Taranaki wide divisions at Inglewood.


New Plymouth golfer Murray Martin was part of the 12 strong New Zealand Seniors golf team who completed a great comeback last week to defend the Sanctuary Cove Trophy against their Australian rivals at the Muriwai Golf Club. The Kiwis trailed 4.5 to 1.5 after the opening foursomes but rallied to win the four ball to close the gap to one point going into the final 12 individual matches. The Kiwis finished strongly winning nine of the 12 singles matches to clinch the trophy for the 3rd year running with a 14.5 -9.5 winning margin. Martin was unbeaten in three matches pairing up with Mike Leitch to halve his foursomes match and then teaming up with Auckland’s Arthur Parkin to win their fourball match before completing an impressive 6/4 individual win.
