The revamped senior men’s matchplay competition tees off at Te Ngutu Golf Club on Sunday with the first round for the six eight man teams. Taranaki number one Brad Hayward will lead the Pita Pit Pirates against the Jennian Homes Hornets who will be led by Kerry Otene. The Taranaki Golf Centre Pumas** team includes a trio of masters –Murray Martin, Daryl Baird and Robbie Sim and they take on the Taranaki Hardcore Rebels, who include Jamie Reid, Joseph Doyle and the masters duo of Tony Cawley and Tony Hardy. In the final first round of matches Revital Fertiliser Coasters, led by Aarun Langton and Brook Gray meet the Vanburwray Vipers who will be spearheaded by New Plymouth club mates Mark Kennard and Zach Lewis

The 2013 Waitara Golf Club men’s stroke play championships were completed recently. In the senior division Shane Grylls (75-70-74-219) cruised to an easy victory with Guy Morris (85-75-90-250) finishing second. In the intermediate division, Leo Lornie (85-76-82-243) finished three shots ahead of Paul Carrington (81-85-80-246), Geoff White (88-82-76-246) and Bruce Taylor (86-75-85-246). The junior division was won by Peter Cullen (84-84-90-258) with Huffam (91-87-86-264) and Brian Rattenbury (91-85-88-264) finishing six shots back in second equal place. Club stalwart Bill Bird (103-103-95-301) took out the limit title with Connor Wilson (110-92-102-304) finishing runner-up

The Taranaki District Seniors monthly tournament was played at the Westown Golf Club last Monday and attracted 48 starters including seven women. The men’s monthly button was won by Murray Davidson from Urenui with 42 stableford points while the women’s button was won by Glenice Lile from Westown with 34 points. Other leading scores were: Women- Tui Steele, Manaia, 33, Sharyn Newsome, Fitzroy, 33; Senior men- Colin Twigley, Westown, 40, David Bolton, Westown, 39, Peter Greer, Urenui, 39, Bernie Lile, Westown, 38; Intermediate-Don Sole, Inglewood, 37, Pat Carr, Westown, 36,Ted Broadhurst, Westown, 35; Junior-Brian Venables, Westown, 40,Robert Blyde, Urenui, 36, Kevin Conlin, Westown, 35. The Taranaki District Seniors are holding an additional tournament next Monday (24th June) at the New Plymouth Golf Club.

Fitzroy golfer Maurice Kemsley scored a rare hole in one on Saturday at his home club. The 16 handicapper used a five wood to hole out on the difficult 197 metre par three fourth hole.
