The Revital Fertilizer Coasters have taken the early lead after the first round of the revamped senior men’s matchplay competition was played at Te Ngutu on Sunday. The Coasters were the only team to win, with a hard fought 5-3 win over the Vanburwray Vipers. Peter Joseph (Coaters) upset Taranaki representative Zach Lewis 4/3, while New Plymouth professional Patrick Moore (Coasters) had a crucial 1up win over James Malone while Aarun Langton sealed the Coasters win with a 5/3 winning margin over Mark Kennard. The other two clashes of the first round resulted in two tied rubbers with the Taranaki Hardcore Rebels drawing with the Taranaki Golf Centre Pumas and the Pita Pit Pirates finishing with the same result against the Jennian Homes Hornets. Key match results for the Rebels saw Fletcher Broderick edge out Michael Sharp 1up and Jamie Reid prevail over Murray Martin 4/2 while for the Pumas; Ben Joseph upset Joseph Doyle 1 up. In the Pirates-Hornets match Brad Hayward (Pirates) beat Kerry Otene 2 up while team mate Ethan Jones had a comfortable 7/5 win over Brendan Smith which was countered by his older brother, Sam, who beat Peter Eliason 3/2 for the Hornets. The second round will be played at Stratford on Sunday with the Rebels facing the Pirates, the Coasters against the Hornets and the Pumas versus the Vipers.

The Manaia Golf Club men’s matchplay championships were played last Saturday. In the 36 hole senior final Andrew Gibson beat Paul Hunn 4/3 while green keeper and Taranaki Golf life member Phil Elliott beat Jim Ngere 3/2 to claim the intermediate division. In the junior final Shaun Kalin beat Gavin Symes 2/1 and Jade Symes picked up the limit title with a 4/3 victory over Craig Jones.

 

Waitara golfer Cole Horter has started his golfing career in perfect style. The 15 year old Francis Douglas student has only recently taken up the game and on Sunday he played a six iron to record a hole in one on the 120 metre par three 17th hole on his home course.
