The second round of the Taranaki men’s senior matchplay competition was played at Stratford on Sunday. First round leaders Revital Fertiliser Coasters received a serious sting from the Jennian Homes Hornets when they suffered a 6-2 loss. Brian Rowland, Tyla Otene and Sam Jones led the Hornets charge while New Plymouth professional Grant Moorhead made a guest appearance for the Coasters and edged out Kerry Otene 2 up. The Taranaki Golf Centre Pumas had a resounding 6 ½ - 1 ½ winning margin over the Vanburwray Vipers with Murray Martin the only player to lose for the Pumas, going down 3/2 to Mark Kennard in the clash of the number ones. In the final match, the Taranaki Hardcore Rebels managed to hold out the Pita Pit Pirates with a 4 ½ -3 ½ victory. Fletcher Broderick (Rebels) beat Damien Powell 2/1 while the experienced master’s duo of Tony Hardy and Tony Cawley also had crucial wins for the Rebels. Taranaki number one Brad Hayward (Pirates) maintained his unbeaten record at number one with a 3/2 win over Jamie Reid. The third round will be played at Westown on Sunday 21st July.

 

New Plymouth golfer Murray Martin will head across the Tasman this weekend to compete in the Queensland Seniors Stroke Play Championship. The 60 year old New Zealand Seniors representative will play in the 54 hole stroke play event at the Oxley Golf Club in Brisbane from the 8th to the 10th July. Fellow New Zealand Seniors representatives Rodney Baltrop (Wellington) and Michael Baltrop (Auckland) are also competing in the event.

 

A field of 67 starters, including 14 women competed in the latest Taranaki Seniors golf event at the New Plymouth golf Club last Monday. The best overall men’s stableford score went to Ian Besley from Urenui with 45 points while Ann Braithwaite from Stratford recorded the best women’s stableford with 40 points.
