The third round of the Taranaki senior men’s matchplay competition will be played at Westown on Sunday. The Taranaki Golf Centre Pumas should be too strong for the Pita Pit Pirates with the veteran trio of Murray Martin, Daryl Baird and Robbie Sim leading the charge for the Pumas. The Taranaki Hardcore Rebels will be looking to maintain their unbeaten run when they meet the Revital Fertiliser Coasters while the top of the table Jennian Homes Hornets will look to keep the Vanburwray Vipers at the bottom of the table.

New Plymouth professional Craig Owen will be looking for a continuation of improvement in his form when he tees up in the A$20,000 Queensland PGA Seniors Championship at the Redlands Bay Golf Club today. Owen shot a nine over par round of 81 to finish 53rd equal in the A$10,000 Surfers Paradise Legends Pro-Am on Monday but improved to 15th equal with a three over par round in the A$10,000 Sanctuary Cove Legends Pro-Am on Tuesday. The PGA championship is a 36 hole event with the final round tomorrow.

Some wayward driving over the last two rounds cost New Plymouth golfer Murray Martin (73-78-81-232) the chance to take out the Queensland Seniors (55 and over) championship played at the Oxley Golf Club in Brisbane last week. The 60 year old finished 6th equal in the 110 strong field and 3rd in the 60-64 age group category. The overall title was won by Allan Bullas (77-73-80-230) while Wellington golfer, Neale Pitches (74-79-78-231) was the best of the Kiwi golfers finishing in third equal place overall, with New Zealand Seniors representatives Michael Baltrop (80-72-81-233) and Rodney Baltrop (76-83-79-238) further back in the field.

A field of 39 players including eight women participated in the Taranaki Seniors July monthly tournament at the Eltham Golf Club last Monday. The men’s monthly button was won by Norm Lofthouse from Kaitake with 42 stableford points while the women’s button was won by Maree Munro from Fitzroy with 36 points. Other leading scores were-Women- Maureen Cornwallis, Westown, 33, Helen Beaurepairie, Urenui,33; Senior men- Trevor Jones, Te Ngutu, 40, John Stewart, Fitzroy,38.Dave Bolton, Westown, 34, John Ainsworth, Westown, 34,Irvine Marr, Westown, 34; Intermediate-Paddy Keegan, Inglewood, 37,Noel Boddie, Eltham,33, John Gane, Westown, 32; Junior-Alan Copplestone, Urenui, 36,Garry Vincent, Stratford, 35,Lou Ramsdale, .Urenui, 35.

The North Taranaki Age Group Championships will be held at the Fitzroy Golf Club next Wednesday, 24th July.
