McCallum on Golf

A field of over 60 players have entered the Egmont Championships to be played at the Stratford Golf Club on Sunday. Around 40 players will compete in the 36 hole championship event with the balance playing in an 18 hole tournament. Favourites for the men’s title include defending champion Kerry Otene (Inglewood), Taranaki Masters Champion, Aarun Langton (Opunake) and Tony Cawley from the host club. The women’s title is likely to be a battle between teenagers Holly Winter (Manaia) and Vanessa Bouvet (New Plymouth). New Plymouth golfer Brad Hayward (71-70-71-74-286) put in another consistent performance to finish 2nd in the Kapi Tareha Memorial tournament played at the Napier Golf Club last weekend. The Taranaki number one fired a two under par total for the 72 hole event to finish one shot behind Manawatu golfer Josh Munn (71-72-71-71-285). Other Taranaki scores –Kerry Otene (73-73-79-75-300), Jamie Reid (74-74-73-80-301), Tim White (75-73-81-79-308), Fletcher Broderick (77-83-75-78-313), Joseph Doyle (84-78-81-74-317), Zach Lewis (85-76-82-77-320), Ben Joseph ( 81-78-82-82-323).

Opunake golfer Aarun Langton (67-70-137) was in a clas  of his own at the Spicers Taranaki Masters Championship last weekend. The two handicapper shot a three under par total for the 36 hole event to blitz his nearest rivalm, Brain Rowland (70-80-150) from Fitzroy by a massive 13 shots. The women’s title went to Westown golfer Kim Lucas (80-77-157) who finished three shots clear of Carol Chard (79-81-160) from New Plymouth. The best men’s net score went to 17 handicapper John Niwa (64-70-134) who finished three shots clear of 15 handicapper Kevin Stott (68-69-137). Other leading men’s gross scores were: Tony Hardy (74-77-151), Craig Webby (73-79-152), Dean Baldock (78-74-152), Grant MacKay (73-80-153), Robbie Sim (72-82-154(, John Newland (77-77-154).

15 teams from throughout Taranaki competed in the Taranaki women’s club teams event at the Manaia Golf Club last week. The 18 hole stableford event was won by Patea (Gareth Hughes, Pam Hawken, Barbara Hill, Janice Huston ) with at team total of 99 points , one point clear of Stratford (Ann Braithwaite, Diane Morresey, Jill Evans, Debbie Volzke ).

A field of 61 golfers including 9 women participated in the Taranaki Seniors August monthly tournament at the Kaitake Golf Club.The men’s monthly button was won by Merv Dew from Inglewood with 40 stableford points.
