The Taranaki women’s golf representative season tees off this weekend with an eight strong team competing in the Central North Island quadrangular tournament at the Taupo Golf Club. The inform Holly Winter (15) will lead the team with fellow Manaia teenager Celeste McLean (16) coming in at number two. Rochelle Keegan (Westown) comes in at number three, with 13 year old Vanessa Bouvet and veteran Carol Chard (both New Plymouth) at four and five respectively. Westown’s Kim Lucas is at number six while another Manaia teenager, Tyla Winter (14) plays at seven with Joanne Mcdonald from New Plymouth anchoring the team at number eight. The team meet Wellington in the opening round on Saturday morning, followed by Waikato on Saturday afternoon and hosts, Bay of Plenty on Sunday morning.


New Plymouth professional Grant Moorhead (68-71-139) was beaten in a sudden death play-off by Nick Gillespie (67-72-139) to finish second in the $20,000 Pin High Craigs Investment Partners Wanganui Pro-am on Saturday. After both players tied at one under par for the 36 hole event, Moorhead lost the title when he bogied the 18th hole at the Belmont course. Fellow New Plymouth professional Dominic Barson (70-70-140) tied for third with Mark Brown (69-71-1400) while former Taranaki Open winner Troy Ropiha (70-72-142) tied for fifth with Josh Geary (69-73-142). Other Taranaki scores were: Craig Owen (74-71-145-15th =), Blake Cowley (71-76-147-17th=), Patrick Moore (76-84-160-32nd=).

Taranaki Golf Development Manager Murray Martin played an important part in the New Zealand Seniors golf team win over Australia in the Sanctuary Cove Trophy event last week. The 60 year old who won the Australian Seniors title at Royal Queensland the preceding week, was  unbeaten with three wins in the Kiwi’s 14.5 – 9.5 winning score line.

Taranaki’s number one amateur Brad Hayward (71-71-217) took out the 54 hole Ngaruawahia Classic played on the 7th and 8th September with a two shot win over Daniel Graham (69-74-76-217) and a further two shots back to Luke Toomey (76-73-72-221). Fellow New Plymouth member Zach Lewis (77-77-76-230) finished 9th equal.

 15 clubs will compete in the Dow AgroSciences Taranaki top club competition at the New Plymouth Golf Club on Sunday. The event involves four players from each club (senior, intermediate and junior men plus one woman) with the team accumulating the highest aggregate stableford points total being the Taranaki top club for 2013. The inaugural event was held last year and was won by Manukorihi.
