Taranaki’s male club champions will go head to head on Saturday when they compete for provincial honours in the Taranaki Champion of Champions tournament at Waitara. The 36 hole event has attracted a bumper field with 18 of the province’s 20 clubs being represented. Players will be vying for the senior, intermediate and junior champion of champions titles and there is also a three man club teams prize for the best aggregate net score. The senior title is likely to be a three way tussle between defending champion Aarun Langton (Opunake) and Taranaki representatives Kerry Otene (Inglewood) and Tim White (Hawera).

New Plymouth golfer Murray Martin heads to Vietnam this weekend to compete in the Asia Pacific Seniors Championship. Martin, who is the Australian Seniors Strokeplay champion, is a member of the six man New Zealand team participating in the 54 hole event at the Montgomery Links Golf Club in DaNang from Thursday 21st November until Saturday 23rd November. The other team members are : Michael Baltrop, Mike Leitch (Auckland), Phil Hunter, Andy McKechnie (Waikato) and Frank Borren (Wellington).

The Taranaki men’s masters team failed to fire at the national interprovincial tournament at the Coringa Golf Club in Christchurch last week. The five strong team won two of eight games against Tasman and North Harbour to finish 14th of the 15 teams competing. For the record Aarun Langton had four individual wins at number one, Murray Martin had four wins and a half at number two, Tony Hardy had a win and a half at number three, Brian Rowland had two wins and two halves at number four and Dean Baldock had two wins and a half at number five. The week long competition was won by Bay of Plenty who finished half a point ahead of Northland and Aorangi.

Taranaki women’s golf selectors Patricia Stewart (New Plymouth) and Robyn Robins (Kaitake) have named the Taranaki five strong team to compete at the national women’s interprovincial tournament at the Muriwai Links course from 10-14 December. The team in playing order is: Celeste McLean (Manaia), Rochelle Keegan (Westown), Vanessa Bouvet (New Plymouth), Holly Winter (Mania) and Joanne McDonald (New Plymouth). The travelling reserve is Tyla Winter (Manaia).

Tyla Winter is the Manaia women’s senior club champion for 2013. The 14 year old upset her 15 year old sister, Holly winning the 36 hole final on Saturday, one up. In the Bronze One final Jackie Higgins beat Michelle Furness 3/2  while Christine Vanner beat Wilma Harrop to claim the Bronze Two division. The Bronze Three division was won by Lorna Lefleming who beat Annette Hill 6/5 and the nine hole title went to Bev Hawkes who beat Judy Hurley 1 up.

The Fitzroy Golf Club men’s matchplay championship results for 2013 are: Intermediate -Nick Northam beat Joe Conley 10/8; Junior -Doug Williams beat William Rowland 7/6; Limits -Danyon Doeg beat Connor Stott 6/5. The senior final between Janie Reid and Brian Rowland is due to be played on Saturday 23rd November.
