The Taranaki men’s golf team head north to Auckland this weekend to prepare for the Toro national interprovincial championships. The matchplay format event starts at the North Shore Golf Club on Tuesday with two sections of teams playing six round robin matches, with the top two teams from each section to qualify for the semi-finals next Saturday. The five strong Taranaki team, in playing order is: Brad Hayward, Jamie Reid, Tim White, Tyla Otene and Sam Jones. The draw for the Taranaki team is: Tuesday am versus Aorangi, pm versus Southland; Wednesday am versus Bay of Plenty; pm versus Waikato; Thursday am versus Wellington; Friday pm versus Hawkes Bay.

The New Zealand men’s seniors (55 and over) team claimed the Asia Pacific teams title at the Montgomery Links Golf Club in Vietnam last week, The six strong New Zealand team edged out Australia by three shots over the 54 hole event, with the best four individual scores counting in each round. New Plymouth golfer Murray Martin (77-77-74-226) finished 8th equal overall and 3rd in the over 60 age group category. Other New Zealand scores were: Frank Borren (70-77-74-221), Michael Baltrop (74-76-74-224), Andy Mckechnie (74-76-74-224), Phil Hunter (81-80-76-237), Mike Leitch (82-80-80-242).

Taranaki representative Jamie Reid successfully defended his Fitzroy Golf Club senior men’s matchplay title with a comfortable 8/6 over Brian Rowland on Saturday. Reid was in blistering form and led two up after shooting a four under par round of 64 for the opening 18 holes. The 22 year old put the match beyond doubt when he reeled off seven consecutive threes from the par four 5th hole  (five birdies and two pars).

A field of 104 players participated in the DB and Kiwi Butcher sponsored Urenui Christmas Hamper on Saturday. Leading scores were: Senior men-Groos- Eddie Hollard 73; Net –Dallas Farquhar 61, Johnnie Crow 64; Stableford- Colin Gilberd 42; Intermediate- Net- Ken Green 64, Peter Herrman 64; Stableford-Jack Yang 40; Junior-Net- Phil Schroder61, Rob Wilson 61; Stableford-john Hymers 43; Senior women-net-Barbara Rawlinson 64; Stableford-Tui Maxwell40; Junior Women-Net-Judith Hymers 65; Stableford-Elaine Selby 42.

Congratulations to Margaret Putt (Volunteer of the Year) and Murray Martin (Senior Sportsperson of the Year) on their respective wins at the Taranaki Sportsperson of the Year Awards last week. Both are loyal servants for golf in Taranaki and fantastic ambassadors for Taranaki Golf.
