 New Plymouth amateur Brad Hayward put up a very good showing to reach the final 16 at the Australian Amateur Men’s Matchplay Championship played at the Grange Golf Club in Adelaide last week. The 22 year old shot two rounds of 73 to qualify 55th of the 64 qualifiers and then best fellow New Zealanders Denzel Ieremia (1 up) and Compton Pikari ( 4/3) before losing to the eventual champion Tae Koh 2/1. Hayward is playing in Australia as part of a Taranaki Golf sponsored trip and will compete in the Lake Macquarie Amateur starting today at the Belmont Golf Club in Sydney before competing in the New South Wales Amateur championship next week.

A field of 46 junior golfers competed in the Patrick Moore Junior Open tournament at the New Plymouth Golf Club last week. The best gross in the 18 hole event went to Ethan Jones from Manaia who shot a one under par round of 71. The best overall stableford went to Max Shearer from New Plymouth with 43 points while the best boy’s stableford went to Hamish Pittams from Te Ngutu with 42 points. Caitlin Reardon from Manaia had the best girls stableford with 40 points and Manaia juniors Niall Clancy and Josh Symes took out the nine and six hole competitions respectively with gross scores of 50 and 32.

 129 golfers competed in the annual Beachcombers golf tournament at Kaitake recently. In the senior men’s division Daryl Baird had the best gross score with a two over par round of 70 while Craig Farrant (77-12-65) took out the best net and Kelvin Bishop the best stableford with 39 points.  In the intermediate division Kevin Dodunski won the best gross with a 78 and Ian Colson (81-18-63) had the best net and Mark Boardman the best stableford with 40 points. In the junior division Derek Jones had the best gross with an 82 while Steve Corlett (86-26-60) won the best net and Bill Honeyfield the best stableford with 41 points. The best gross in the women’s division went to Ann Braithwaite with a 75 and Kath Vernon (100-33-67) took out the best net and Helen Beaupaire the best stableford with 37 points.

 Leading scores from the Farmlands open new year tournament held at Opunake were: Senior men –Gross-Aarun Langton 69, Net – Chayne Thompson (67-6-61), Stableford –Troy Forsyth 44; Intermediate-Net-Wayne Davey (84-18-66), Stableford-Paul vanner 43; Junior-Net- Richard Julian (85-23-62), Stableford-Colin Koch 43; Women –Net-Dianne Williams (95-27-68), Stableford Win Finlay 40.

Fitzroy golfer Dennis Reid played the first perfect shot for 20114. The six handicapper used a nine iron to hole in one on the 125 metre par three sixth hole at his home course on Saturday 4th January.
