Media Release

The Taranaki Golf Association and New Plymouth Golf Club regret to announce the cancellation of this year's Taranaki Open.

The tournament, part of the Charles Tour, had been scheduled to be played at the Ngamotu course on April 10th-13th. The Mason Appliances Pro-Am Tournament scheduled for the 9th April has also been cancelled. A number of factors are behind the decision, the most significant of which is the current condition of the Ngamotu course which both the TGA and the NPGC have agreed is not up to the necessary standard to host a 72-hole tournament involving the country's top professional and amateur golfers. The course is currently undergoing an extensive grass rejuvenation programme, and hosting the Taranaki Open this year would also have impacted on the critical autumn timing of re-seeding of the Ngamotu fairways.

NPGC chairman John Pitman says the club's Board is disappointed the plans to host the 2014 Taranaki Open have had to change so close to the event, but the Club and the TGA are committed to maintaining a high standard of both the venue and the organisation for the tournament, and it was felt these would be unable to be met at this time."Our Club has also decided that the No 1 priority for this year must be to complete the course rejuvenation project to the satisfaction of our members. Ngamotu is one of New Zealand's top golf courses, and we are determined that its playing condition must be improved to reflect that status."

TGA chairman Ken Durrant says whilst both the TGA and NPGC are disappointed that this year’s event has been cancelled, both parties are committed to hosting the Open again next year and in years to come.

"We would like to apologise to the Taranaki golfing public and to the tournament's sponsors for having to defer the event this year. But for the tournament to be a success, the venue has to be presented to the high standard expected for Charles Tour events."
