Senior Invitational Matchplay Challenge

The Taranaki Golf Centre Pumas won this year’s Senior Invitational Match Play Pennant with a 4-2 victory over the Revital Fertiliser Coasters at New Plymouth Golf Club on Sunday, in a closely fought contest that was a reversal of last week’s dress rehearsal in the final round of sectional play. With the Coaster’s No2 Damon Powell unavailable, Fitzroy’s Brian Rowland was called in as a late replacement. Rowland achieved a very creditable half against teenager Fletcher Broderick who was playing on his home course.  Coaster’s No6 Euan Ritchie also achieved a square against the experienced Pumas, Captain Robbie Sim.  However it was the results at 3 through 5 that proved to be the undoing of the Coasters. The Pumas Trio of Daniel Lundt, Michael Sharp and Dean Baldock all proved too strong for their opponents. Baldock beat John Newland 2/1, Sharp, Jarron Pittams 5/3 and Lundt squeezing past Travis Stewart 1up, to give the Pumas successive victories in the Finals. The Coasters’ No1 James Malone secured a 2/1 victory against Zach Lewis, but by this time the final had already been decided. Daniel Lundt’s 1up victory ensured he kept his 100% record for the season, a very notable achievement that Daniel should feel suitably proud of.

In the other matches for the minor placing’s, Vanburwray Vipers beat the Taranaki Hardcore Rebels 4-2 to secure 3rd Place. The Viper’s No1 Kerry Otene matched Daniel Lundt’s achievement of a perfect 6 from 6 in helping ensure the team’s victory. The battle to avoid the wooden spoon was a very one sided affair. The Pita Pit Pirates ran out 6-0 winners over the Jennian Homes Hornets.
