Inglewood golfer Kerry Otene (66-62-128) was in a class of his own at the Taranaki men’s Champion of Champions event played at the Waitara Golf Club last Saturday. The plus one handicapper shot a total of six under par for the 36 hole tournament to claim the senior champion of champions title by a massive eight shots over defending champion Aarun Langton (70-66-136) from Opunake. Jamie Reid (69-68-137) from Fitzroy was a further shot back with a trio of players – Daryl Baird (68-71) from Kaitake, Tony Cawley (70-69) from Stratford and Tim White (69-70) from Hawera on 139.

Taranaki’s male club champions will go head to head on Saturday when they compete for provincial honours in the Taranaki Champion of Champions tournament at Waitara. The 36 hole event has attracted a bumper field with 18 of the province’s 20 clubs being represented. Players will be vying for the senior, intermediate and junior champion of champions titles and there is also a three man club teams prize for the best aggregate net score.

The Taranaki men’s golf team finished third at the Central North Island Quadrangular tournament played at the Taupo Golf Club last weekend. The eight strong side was thrashed 7 ½ – ½ in the opening round by Bay of Plenty and then went down 4 ½ to 3 ½ to Manawatu -Wanganui in a close match with three games being halved. In the final round Taranaki beat Eastlands 6-2. For the Taranaki side Kerry Otene was unbeaten at number five with two halves and a win while Tyla Otene (no 4) and Sam Jones (no 6) both had two wins.

Fifteen year old Fletcher Broderick will make his debut for the Taranaki senior men’s golf team this weekend. The NPBHS student will play at number eight in the Central North Island quadrangular tournament at the Taupo Golf Club against Bay of Plenty, Eastlands and Manawatu-Wanganui. Taranaki selector John Newland has retained the top seven players from the recent Northern Quadrangular. The team in playing order, is Brad Hayward, Jamie Reid, Tim White, Tyla Otene, Kerry Otene, Sam Jone, Zach Lewis and Fletcher Broderick.

Taranaki men’s golf selector John Newland has a lot to think about after the  eight strong  Taranaki team finished bottom of the heap at the Northern Quadrangular played at the Akarana Golf Club last weekend. The Taranaki side was on the receiving end of two 7-1 drubbings to Waikato and Northland on the opening day before putting up a better effort in losing to Auckland 4½ - 3½ in the final round. The Taranaki junior boys team also finished last but did manage a half against Northland.

Two wins against Manawatu-Wanganui (8-0) and Hawkes Bay (4 ½ - 3 ½) secured second place for the Taranaki women’s golf team at the Sybil Green quadrangular last weekend. Manaia juniors Celeste McLean (3 wins) and Holly Winter (2 ½ wins) were unbeaten at number one and three respectively. Hosts Wellington beat Taranaki 6 ½ - 1 ½ in the opening round and were easy overall winners of the event.

The Taranaki men’s golf representative schedule gets under way this weekend with a 10 strong side competing in the Shand Cup quadrangular event at the Paraparaumu Beach Links course. The Taranaki side will be led by the in form Brad Hayward with matches against Manawatu-Wanganui, Hawkes Bay and hosts Wellington. The other team members in playing order are: Jamie Reid (Fitzroy), Kerry Otene (Inglewood), Tyla Otene (Westown), Tim White (Hawera), Sam Jones (Manaia), Zach Lewis (New Plymouth), Joseph Doye (Tumahu), Brook Gray (Tumahu) and Des Wilcox (Westown).

Urenui Golf Club is a nine-hole course with alternative greens and tees to allow an eighteen-hole game. We are located on the coast with some greens and tees backing onto the beach. Bordering the course is the Urenui Beach motor camp that offers visitors a stay over option.
